According to Sony Music, which finally found the decency to address Kesha’s legal battle with her alleged abuser Dr. Luke, the singer can in no way free herself from the contract.
Kesha has received massive support from both her fellow colleagues and her fans following the Supreme Court ruling, which said that she could not record any music outside her contract with Lukas Gottwald, better known as Dr. Luke, and his Sony label.
The growing online campaign ‘free Kesha’ pleaded Sony to release Kesha from the contract, prompting the record label to release a statement concerning the matter. Sony’s statement, released on Thursday evening via The New York Times, claims they can’t do anything to terminate her contract with Dr. Luke.
They said that they ‘made it possible for Kesha to record without any connection, involvement or interaction with Luke whatsoever,’ adding that it’s just not up to them to terminate the contract. The label also said that they are ‘doing everything they can to support the artist in these circumstances,’ but it doesn’t seem that many people actually believe that Sony’s hands are tied here.
