American Hustle and 12 Years Slave are about to dominate the 2014 Academy Awards.
In the category Best Picture, the two movies share the nomination with Captain Phillips, Gravity, Nebraska, Philomena, Dallas Buyers Club, Her and The Wolf of Wall Street.
British actor Christian Bale and Chiwetel Ejiofor are both fighting for the Best Actor award, along with Leonardo DiCaprio and Matthew McConaughey, while Amy Adams was nominated in the category Best Actress, and has a chance to be a double winner this year after bagging the Golden Globe Best Actress award this week for the same role.
Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael Fassbender and Bradley Cooper all got acclaim and nominations for their roles as supporting actors in their respective films. In the category of Best Director, both Steve McQueen and David O Russell got nominations for 12 Years Slave and American Hustle, respectively. Also included in the group are Martin Scorsese, Alexander Payne and Alfonso Cuaron for The Wolf of Wall Street, Nebraska and Gravity, respectively.
British director McQueen told the BBC shortly after the nominations, “I’m just very excited – nine nominations. A lot of the Oscar nominees are British. I’m just so excited. We worked very hard and are very privileged to receive these nominations.”
The Thor star Chris Hemsworth and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced the nominations today, however, the winners will be revealed on March 2, when the celebrated ceremony takes place in LA.
Despite the uncertainties, by the look of the full list of nominees, we can see that American Hustle, 12 Years Slave and Wolf of The Wall Street are the definite favorites. Let the games begin!
