Modern Family Star Elizabeth Pena’s Cause Of Death Revealed

"Macbeth" Broadway Opening Night - Arrivals & Curtain Call

Actress Elizabeth Pena died from alcohol abuse, according to her death certificate, obtained by TMZ on Oct. 22.

The report confirms that the tragic cause of the Cuban-American actress’ death was cirrhosis of the liver “due to alcohol.”

The Los Angeles County Coroner cited cirrhosis of the liver due to alcohol, as well as cardiopulmonary arrest, cardiogenic shock and acute gastrointestinal bleeding as the three other causes of death.

The La Bamba and Modern family star suffered from cirrhosis for quite some time.  She experienced acute gastrointestinal bleeding during her final hours, which caused her heart to stop.

Last week, Pena’s manager, Gina Rugolo, said that the New Jersey-born actress died of natural causes after a brief illness.

“She was our star. She was my star. We celebrated her triumphs. We sweated through her struggles.”

Pena is survived by her husband, Hans Rolla, and two children.
