Mindy Kaling Disowns Brother Who Posed As Black To Get Into Med School?
Mindy Kaling’s brother Vijay Chokal-Ingam claims he performed a social experiment by pretending to be black to see if it was easier to enroll into a medical school.
In his book, titled Almost Black, Chokal-Ingam says that he got into medical school after shaving his head, trimming his ‘long Indian eyelashes’, and using his middle name Jojo in order to pass as a black man. In his application form, Chokal-Ingam put an emphasis on his time spent in Africa, where he lived with his family before moving to America.
He applied to several US medical schools, and says on the book website that he ‘never lied about anything on my application except my race.’ Chokal-Ingam was eventually accepted into St. Louis University in 1999, but soon dropped out and decided not to pursue medicine. He currently works as a writer and graduate school admissions consultant.
Writer and actress Mindy Kaling was apparently shocked by her brother’s experiment and her rep confirmed that she knew nothing about his decision to pretend to be black. To make matters worse, Kailing’s rep claims that the two have not spoken in years.
“Mindy has been estranged from her brother for years. She was not aware of his decision to apply to medical school under a different name and race.”
