Leonardo DiCaprio Auctions Outer Space Trip And Raises $1 Million For Charity

Leonardo DiCaprio auctioned off a trip to outer space for himself and a guest and managed to raise nearly $1 million (£625,000) for charity!

The auction was a part of the annual amfAR gala held during the Cannes Film Festival at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in the south of France on Thursday (22May14). The traditional charity event always gathers famous movie starts and other celebrities who come to town for the Cannes Film Festival.

The auction raised money for AIDS research and The Wolf of Wall Street was among the many stars to give up rare and valuable items up for sale. Leo auctioned a place on a 2015 Virgin Galactic space trip with him and according to Variety.com, the unique and unexampled ticket was sold for a staggering $956,795 (£597,997)! At last year’s (13) amfAR Gala, another once-in-a-lifetime ticket on a trip with Leo was sold for an unbelievable $1.5 million (£937,500).

American actress and former fashion model Sharon Stone auctioned the 2014 event, stressing items such as Andy Warhol’s 1967 painting of diva Marilyn Monroe, a pair of gloves that used to belong to fashion mogul Karl Lagerfeld and a collection of stunning red gowns created by fashion designers from around the world.

Another thing sold at the auction was a 7 day rental of the yacht (with 11 bedrooms, mind you!) in which Sharon has been staying in during her trip to Canes. Believe it or not, the fundraiser collected an unparalleled $35 million (£22.5 million).

Some of the celebrities that attended the gala include Milla Jovovich, Heidi Klum, John Travolta, Jane Fonda, Jessica Chastain, Marion Cotillard, Rosario Dawson, Justin Bieber and Michelle Rodriguez. Lana Del Rey, Robin Thicke and classical star Andrea Bocelli performed during the night and Bocelli dedicated My Way to late actress Dame Elizabeth Taylor, the founder of amfaR.
