How Were The Celebrity Accounts Hacked?

Over 100 Hollywood stars were hacked on 31 August 2014 when their nude photos appeared on the Internet.

The celebrity leak scandal started on a photo board platform 4Chan where people can post anything anonymously. Although it is still not known who published the pictures, officials said that all the celebrities in question used iCloud, the Apple cloud service. Apple Inc.

Apple Inc. said in a statement that that some celebrities had their accounts compromised by a mass attack on “usernames, passwords, and security questions”.

“After more than 40 hours of investigation, we have discovered that certain celebrity accounts were compromised by a very targeted attack on user names, passwords and security questions, a practice that has become all too common on the Internet. None of the cases we have investigated has resulted from any breach in any of Apple’s systems including iCloud® or Find my iPhone. We are continuing to work with law enforcement to help identify the criminals involved.”

Experts have confirmed that hackers were able to access personal data stored on the cloud either by using Apple’s ‘Find my iPhone’ feature or hacking into their computers.
