In a recent interview, actress, model, and activist Emma Watson admitted that the media have recently labeled her as a ‘feminazi,’ a ‘diva,’ a First World Feminist,’ as well as ‘difficult.”
However, she pays no attention to the insulting labels, claiming that she will not allow them to prevent her from doing the right thing. She added that she feels like she and other female celebrities deserve to be paid the same amount of money as their male counterparts, without the fear of being described as ‘demanding.’ Here’s what she said about sexism:
“I’ve had my ass slapped as I’ve left a room. I’ve felt scared walking home. I’ve had people following me. I don’t talk about these experiences much, because coming from me they’ll sound like a huge deal and I don’t want this to be about me, but most women I know have experienced it and worse.”
Although she has high hopes for the future and believes that things will improve, she is certain that men have to be a part of the fixing process too. She mentioned that in order for things to take a turn for the better, men have to realize the extent of sexism that women are subjected to on a daily basis and that only then can the problem be solved for good.
To quote her:
“There’s no point in me going, ‘You all have to go away from having read this article and decide that you are a feminist.’ That’s useless. The only thing that is going to make a difference is if men go away and speak to the women in their lives about what they are experiencing.”
