Ellen DeGeneres’ Celebrity Selfie Crashed Twitter

Twitter executives must have been shocked on Sunday when Oscar host Ellen DeGeneres managed to shut down the most popular social media site with a selfie. The host gathered several celebrities for a selfie in order to set a new record for the most re-tweeted photograph. Needless to say, she did it.

The famous selfie included Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Jared Leto, Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Spacey, Channing Tatum and Bradley Cooper. That’s right, they all managed to squeeze into the shot.

“If only Bradley’s arm was longer. Best photo ever,” was the caption of the photograph, addressing Bradley Cooper’s arm as he took the shot.

Ellen encouraged the audience to re-tweet the image, but she might not have been expecting the photo to reach more than 500,000 re-posts in a matter of minutes. The photo was “favorite” an impressive 300,000 times.

Such website traffic was too much for poor Twitter that shut down almost immediately. However, it was up within a half an hour, topping the snap count to 2.2 million retweets, which is the current record.

“We got an email from Twitter and we crashed and broke Twitter. We have made history,” Ellen said shortly after the break-down.

The previous “re-tweeting” record was held by Barrack Obama and his wife Michelle on election night in 2012 with more than 780,000 re-tweets.
