Angelina Jolie Has Ovaries And Tubes Removed Following Cancer Scare
Actress and director Angelina Jolie revealed Tuesday that she underwent preventative surgery to remove her ovaries and Fallopian tubes, two years after getting a preventative double mastectomy.
Writing in the New York Times, the Oscar winner and UN envoy confessed that it was not an easy decision to make, but added that her children ‘will never have to say, ‘Mom died of ovarian cancer.’’
Jolie, who went through the double mastectomy in 2013, carries a mutation in the BRAC1 gene that puts her at a high risk for breast and ovarian cancers. Also, her mother, grandmother and aunt have all died of cancer.
“The beautiful thing about such moments in life is that there is so much clarity. You know what you live for and what matters.”
Now, Angelina is going through early menopause and can no longer have any more biological children.
“I expect some physical changes. But I feel at ease with whatever will come, not because I am strong but because this is a part of life. It is nothing to be feared.”
She wanted people to know about her experience in order to provide information to women who are dealing with similar situations.
“There is more than one way to deal with any health issue. The most important thing is to learn about the options and choose what is right for you personally. It is not easy to make these decisions. But it is possible to take control and tackle head-on any health issue. You can seek advice, learn about the options and make choices that are right for you. Knowledge is power.”
